Asphalt Calculator
Length × width × compacted thickness × density — reported in the tons your plant sells. Four mix densities built in, waste factor included.
- 145
- lb/ft³ compacted hot mix
- 80 ft²
- covered per ton @ 2 in
- 1.96
- tons per cubic yard
- ~25%
- loose-to-compacted fluff

The tonnage formula
Tons = Area (ft²) × (t ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2,000 × (1 + waste)
- Area
- length × width (ft²)
- t
- compacted thickness (inches)
- 145
- compacted hot mix density (lb/ft³)
- 2,000
- pounds per US ton
Metric: tonnes = m² × thickness (m) × 2.322. The full derivation is in the how-to-calculate guide.
The one asphalt-specific twist versus a concrete takeoff: the answer converts to weight, because plants batch and bill by the certified scale ticket. Everything upstream — measuring, unit conversion, waste — is the same discipline. If you only need the volume, the volume calculator skips the density step.
Worked example: parking pad
A 30 × 18 ft parking pad, 4 in compacted hot mix, machine laid with simple edges.
- 1
Area
30 × 18 = 540 ft²
- 2
Volume
540 × (4 ÷ 12) = 180 ft³
- 3
Weight
180 × 145 = 26,100 lb
- 4
Tons + 5% waste
26,100 ÷ 2,000 × 1.05 = 13.7 tons
Result: Order 14 tons — one tandem truck plus a small top-up, so ask the plant to load 14 on one truck if legal in your state.

Density quick reference
Tonnage lives and dies by density. Full tables — including millings and binder — in the density chart.
| Material | kg/m³ | lb/ft³ | t/m³ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot mix asphalt (compacted)145 lb/ft³ — the estimating standard | 2,322 | 145 | 2.32 |
| Hot mix asphalt (loose, in truck)Fluffs ~20–25% before rolling | 1,870 | 116.7 | 1.87 |
| Warm mix asphalt (compacted)Same aggregates, lower placing temp | 2,300 | 143.6 | 2.3 |
| Cold mix / cold patch (compacted)Higher voids than hot mix | 2,200 | 137.3 | 2.2 |
| Asphalt millings (loose)RAP; compacts to ~1,950 | 1,650 | 103 | 1.65 |

Asphalt Calculator
Tons and cubic yards for any paving area. Uses compacted thickness — the thickness after rolling, which is what plans specify.
